Greetings,
I hope everyone’s staying warm this lovely December?
Literary influence is important to me when it comes to getting the right “mood” for writing a particular genre. For example, I’ve recently been re-reading Leiber’s Fafherd & the Gray Mouser short stories. They’ve got that “Old School” flavor that writing a dungeon first mapped out in 1972 requires! Especially when it comes to weird encounters and odd puzzles.
For the mandatory Victorious reference, one bit of the Nehwon stories are the caverns of Ningauble of the Seven Eyes. These tunnels lead people to different worlds, realities, or genres. After all, if Fafherd and his friend the Gray Mouser can find themselves moving from Nehwon to Earth’s Mediterranean circa 300 BCE, then why couldn’t those same heroes find themselves on a Victorious Earth.
The two adventurers even appeared in a 1970s Wonder Woman comic book, so Victoria’s Britain shouldn’t be a stretch. Conversely, some intrepid Steampunk SuperMankind could find themselves chasing villains through an underground catacomb and find themselves emerging into Nehwon, with all the dangers and opportunities such might involve…
Roleplaying games are fired by imagination, don’t let yours get in a rut!
